Deep Plane Facelift Postoperative Care: A Complete Recovery Guide

Are you wondering what your recovery will be like after a facelift? As a facelift specialist since 2016, I’ll guide you through every step of your postoperative journey.

The Deep Plane technique, especially its more advanced variant, the Preservation Facelift, allows for a significantly faster and more comfortable recovery than traditional techniques.

While with a traditional facelift, you’d need 4-6 weeks to return to your normal life, I can help you get back in just 15-20 days.

No uncomfortable bandages, no pain.

With the confidence of being in the hands of a specialist with nearly 10 years dedicated to facial lifting and hundreds of successful cases.

Let me break it down for you.

Preservation Deep Plane Postoperative Care: The Fastest Recovery

A Deep Plane Facelift Recovery

The postoperative recovery after a Deep Plane facelift is generally better than that of a classic facelift.

Why?

Because the deep plane where a Deep Plane facelift works is what we call a natural gliding plane.

In other words: the face’s mobility is possible thanks to the movement of a “mobile” layer of tissue over a “fixed” layer.

By working in this natural movement space, the Deep Plane facelift is anatomically more respectful than classic techniques, which involve aggressive skin separation.

Preservation Deep Plane: The Most Advanced Technique

For the past two years, I’ve been using the most advanced variant of the Deep Plane technique in my practice: the Preservation Facelift.

This technique minimizes subcutaneous work even further, preserving the connection between anatomical structures (skin and SMAS). The result is:

  • Less surgical trauma
  • Less postoperative swelling
  • Faster recovery
  • More natural and lasting results
  • Reduced risk of bleeding

The Preservation Deep Plane not only respects natural anatomy but also optimizes it to speed up your recovery.

What does this mean for your recovery?

Traditional Facelift:

Aggressive skin separation
More trauma and swelling
4-6 weeks of recovery
Significant pain

Preservation Deep Plane (my technique):

Works in natural anatomical planes
Minimal surgical trauma
15-20 days of recovery
Virtually pain-free recovery

Since I started using this technique, not only has it drastically reduced my patients’ recovery times, but I’ve even been able to lower the post-operative analgesic regimen.

With the traditional SMAS facelift, I needed strong painkillers like Enantyum, Nolotil, and others.

Now?

Just Paracetamol (Tylenol)

Step-by-Step Recovery After a Deep Plane Facelift

Day of Surgery

Day of Surgery

  • You arrive at the hospital first thing in the morning (on an empty stomach, of course!).
  • We’ll meet again before the procedure. We will have already addressed all your questions during the pre-surgical visit, but there’s one more important thing: the surgical marking.
  • Your anesthesiologist will come to see you and pre-medicate you so that you are 100% relaxed.
  • The entire surgical team will be focused on you with a specially designed anesthetic protocol to ensure you have a peaceful sleep and a gentle awakening.
  • Do you usually get nausea or headaches after general anesthesia? You can forget about that thanks to our anesthetic protocol!
  • Once the surgery is complete, we will transfer you to the post-anesthesia recovery unit. After a while, you’ll be moved to your room, where a nurse will be at your disposal.
The Day After

The Day After

  • I will visit you the following morning.
  • We’ll remove the bandage (just for the first night), and if any drains were used, we’ll remove them as well.
  • Thanks to the Preservation Facelift, you’ll go home without bandages!
The First Week

The First Week

  • During the first few days, bruising and swelling will start to appear: this is a natural part of the process.
  • To facilitate your recovery, it’s important to walk from the first day, as long as you avoid sun exposure.
  • You’ll need to perform simple home care, which is much easier than you might think.
  • We’ll also schedule follow-up visits to make sure everything is going smoothly and to answer any questions that may arise.
10-15 Days: The Turning Point

10-15 days: The Turning Point

The first 10 days are the most important.

After this period, the recovery process varies from patient to patient (each case is unique), but in general:

  • You’ll begin to see the results, which will give you a huge boost of motivation!
  • The sensation of tightness will decrease.
  • While you may still feel like your face is numb (which is normal and may last a few more weeks), you will already feel much better.
15-20 días: vuelta a la vida normal

15-20 days: Back to Normal Life

Although you still can’t exercise, you can already:

      • Return to work
      • Restart social contact
1 month: Time to Enjoy the Results

1 month: time to enjoy the results

The results take about 6 months to stabilize.

However, after one month, the swelling will have gone down by 90%.

Remember that the neck area takes a little longer to heal, and the evolution of scars depends a lot on each patient, but they are easily hidden with makeup.

          3-6 months: the final result

          3-6 months: the final result

I admit that the 1 to 3-month phase tends to be the hardest: we’ve made significant progress, but the final result hasn’t arrived yet.

          And that can be frustrating.

That’s why we’ll continue to be there by your side.

When the 3-6 months mark arrives, that’s when you’ll see:

          • Scars that are virtually invisible
          • The final result
          • Tissues completely adapted to their new position
          • Maximum satisfaction: you’ll be amazed by how much you don’t recognize yourself in before-and-after photos!

The moment you’ve been waiting for has arrived:

You’ll look in the mirror and say:
“It’s me, but a few years younger!”

People will see you and say:
“You look great, you seem rejuvenated!”

            Deep Plane Facelift Recovery: Timeline

            Time Recovery and recommendations
24-48h Mild discomfort and tightness sensation. Initial swelling and bruising begin to appear. Drain removal; relative rest at home, no bandages.
1 week Relative rest at home, simple wound care and a bit of patience for bruising and swelling to subside.
10-15 days Swelling reduces significantly and you start to glimpse the result we’ll achieve. More controlled inflammation. Tightness sensation decreases but face remains numb.
15-20 days More evident results. Return to work / social contact, although signs of surgery haven’t completely disappeared.
1 month We reach 90% of the result: tightness is minimal and you’ve been living normally for days. Only the scars need to fade.
6 months Results stabilize. Scars mature and appearance is natural and defined.

What to Avoid During the Recovery from a Deep Plane Facelift

            First 15 Days: Minimal Restrictions

Unlike traditional facelifts, with the Deep Plane technique, the limitations are fewer:

            • Relative rest: No absolute rest like with traditional techniques
            • Permitted everyday activities: Walking, light household chores
            • No uncomfortable bandages: Just care for the drainage area during the first 24 hours
            • Gradual facial mobility: Avoid exaggerated facial movements, but you can speak normally
            • Eat normally: Although you may feel some tension while chewing, you can eat normally. It’s important to eat well so your body can heal properly.

Physical Activities to Avoid After a Facelift

During the first month, you should avoid:

            • Intense exercise: Gym, running, contact sports
            • Heavy lifting: Avoid lifting more than 5kg
            • Activities that increase pressure: Inverted yoga, intense pilates
            • Risky sports: Activities that could cause a blow to the face

The post-operative recovery from Deep Plane Facelift will feel so manageable that you’ll want to return to your usual life sooner than you imagine.

You’ll need a bit of patience, but we’ll be here to remind you of what you can and can’t do.

Preservation Deep Plane Facelift Recovery: A Real Case Story

“I took a plane to be in the best hands”

After almost 10 years exclusively focused on Facelift surgery and having performed hundreds of cases, many patients decide to travel far from their city to have surgery with me.

Carmen was 55 years old when she decided the time had come.

After months of research, she came to a conclusion: she wanted the best result and wasn’t afraid to take a plane to have the peace of mind of being in the best hands.

“Doctor, I’ve done a lot of research and it’s clear you’re the specialist I need”, she told me during our initial video call.

The Plan: Customized Preservation Deep Plane

After meeting and understanding exactly what she was looking for, I knew what she needed to achieve her goals.

After explaining what a Preservation Deep Plane facelift was and showing her similar cases, everything was clear

            We got to work.

Her Evolution: The Results Speak for Themselves

            Judge the results for yourself:

            • Before surgery: Loss of jawline definition, jowls, and cervical sagging
            • 2 days after: Minimal swelling, no pain
            • 12 days after: Back to normal life and back home
            • 6 weeks after: Exactly what she wanted: a result that justifies the trip.

Carmen returned home with more than a rejuvenated face: she returned with the certainty that she had made the best decision.

Frequently asked questions about recovery after a Deep Plane facelift

How much sick leave do I need after a Deep Plane facelift?

With the Preservation Deep Plane technique I perform in Barcelona, most of my patients return to work within 15–20 days, especially in office-based jobs (if your work involves significant physical effort or public exposure, such as filming or conferences, it may be advisable to wait a few more weeks). This contrasts with the 4–6 weeks usually required by traditional techniques. By working in the natural anatomical plane and keeping the facial structures intact, trauma is minimal and recovery is much faster. Each case is unique, but my patients are often surprised at how quickly they regain their normal routine.

How long does recovery really take after a Deep Plane facelift?

There is some swelling during the first days, but after 2 weeks most patients can resume almost all normal activities. The final result stabilises around the third or fourth month, although the rejuvenation is already visible from the first month.

Is the recovery after a facelift painful?

It is not usually painful. The most common sensations are tightness, heaviness or slight numbness. These are easily managed with mild painkillers and improve day by day. Much also depends on the surgeon’s precision: always put yourself in the hands of a true specialist.

When will I be able to return to work or social life after a facelift?

With the Deep Plane facelift, recovery is faster and easier than with traditional techniques. Within 10–15 days most patients feel comfortable going out for dinner with friends, although it is advisable to wait a few more weeks before attending social or professional events where you would prefer that no one notices signs of recent surgery. This is precisely the advantage of the Preservation Deep Plane: a more discreet and comfortable recovery that allows you to return to your normal life much sooner.
