Neck Lift in Barcelona
Struggling with a double chin that doesn’t reflect how young you feel inside?
Learn how a Deep Neck Lift can restore your neck’s natural, youthful contour.
What is a Neck Lift?
It is a procedure specifically designed to redefine the jawline and restore the cervical angle.
The procedure is performed through an incision under the chin, which is usually combined with an incision behind the ear in most cases.
However, it’s important to note that in some cases, loss of neck definition is part of a broader loss of firmness affecting both face and neck, which may require a Deep Plane face and necklift for proper treatment.
Not sure if a neck lift is right for you?
If your sagging is in its early stages or you’d prefer to explore non-invasive options first, you’ll find an explanation of the alternatives here so you know exactly when they’re indicated.

How is it different from double chin liposuction?
Each case is unique, but generally, loss of neck definition involves much more than simple weight gain.
In exceptional cases where there is only excess superficial fat, liposuction may be a good option.
However, in most cases, it will be necessary to address the following structures:
- platysma muscle
- digastric muscles
- submandibular glands
Anatomy of the neck
The platysma muscle
This is a superficial muscle, located just beneath the skin, responsible for platysmal bands (vertical bands that appear in the central area of the neck).
When these bands appear, they indicate that the platysma muscle is open in the center, causing the cervical angle to lose definition in profile view and adopt a diagonal position.
For proper treatment, a platysmaplasty is necessary – a procedure that reconstructs the union between both sides of the platysma muscle.

In cases like this, a platysmaplasty may be sufficient to restore the definition of the cervical angle.
The digastric muscles
Excess volume under the chin isn’t always due to excess fat. Sometimes it’s caused by the digastric muscle, which lies just beneath the platysma.
This is a thick muscle, and if not properly treated, it can create the appearance of a “double chin” even in the absence of excess weight.
The solution in this case involves what we call a shaving of the anterior belly of the digastric muscles.

In cases like this, it’s necessary to combine platysmaplasty with a reduction of the anterior belly of the digastric muscles.
The submandibular glands
Very commonly, there is excess volume in the lateral region of the neck. Although we’re not aware of them, this is where the submandibular glands are located, responsible for secreting saliva.
Over time, these can herniate, creating a bulge that blurs the mandibular line.
To restore proper neck definition, it may be necessary to reduce the most superficial portion of these glands, thus allowing for a much more refined neck contour.

This patient was clearly not overweight. However, in recent years, she had experienced a significant loss of neck definition. Through the reduction of the submandibular glands, shaving of the anterior belly of the digastric muscle, and a platysmaplasty, we were able to restore the neck she had years before.
How do I know if I need a Necklift or a Face&Neck Lift?
In most cases, a neck lift should be accompanied by a facelift.
Why?
It’s important to understand that the face and neck are part of the same structural unit. The progressive descent of facial tissues ultimately allows excess tissue to accumulate along the jawline and neck.
This is why, without properly addressing the facial tissue laxity, it won’t be possible to achieve optimal results when there’s also facial sagging associated with loss of definition in the neck area.

What are the risks of a Neck Lift?
For your safety, there are a few key points you should always keep in mind:
- Medical contraindications: Patients with serious or uncontrolled conditions (heart disease, blood clotting disorders, immunosuppression) should not undergo this type of surgery.
- Risk factors: Smoking and poorly controlled high blood pressure significantly increase the risk of healing complications. It is essential to quit smoking several weeks before surgery and to keep blood pressure under control.
- The greatest risk in a neck lift is putting yourself in inexperienced hands. When performed by a specialist, it is a safe procedure. But it is also a demanding surgery: to achieve a natural and lasting result, it is not enough to treat only the surface. The deep structures of the neck must also be addressed, which requires a detailed knowledge of anatomy and extensive surgical experience.
Don’t be misled: always ask to see cases similar to yours and make sure the results truly match what you are looking for.

What is a neck lift and what does it correct?
It is a surgical procedure that works on the skin and muscles of the neck to eliminate sagging, define the jawline, and correct double chin or visible muscle bands.
How is a neck lift different from chin liposuction?
Liposuction only removes fat. A neck lift goes further: it also tightens the muscles and repositions tissues for a much more complete and long-lasting result.
How long do the results of a neck lift last?
Results can last between 10 and 15 years, depending on skin type, patient’s age, and lifestyle. It is a long-term solution.
Who is a good candidate for a neck lift?
People with visible sagging in the neck, loss of jawline definition, or pronounced muscle bands. It is especially recommended from the age of 45 if there are clear signs of aging in this area. However, poor neck definition due to genetic causes can also be a good indication for a neck lift in patients under 40.
How long is recovery after a neck lift?
Recovery after a neck lift varies according to technique and patient characteristics, but generally most patients can resume normal activities in 2 to 3 weeks. Initial swelling and bruising gradually diminish during this period. It's important to follow the surgeon's instructions to optimise healing and achieve a natural and lasting result. Final results are appreciated from 3-4 months onwards.
Does a neck lift leave visible scars?
With advanced techniques like Deep Plane facelift, scars are strategically placed behind the ear and under the chin, remaining practically imperceptible once healed.
